Most people visit websites on their phones. If a page loads slowly or is hard to use, many will leave. The good news is that several fixes are simple.
Measure first
Run your key pages through Google PageSpeed Insights and check the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console. Note which pages are slowest and what the tools suggest.
Optimise images
Large images are the most common cause of slow pages. Resize them to the size they are displayed, use modern formats such as WebP, and enable lazy loading for images below the fold.
Reduce plugins and scripts
Each plugin and tracking script adds weight. Remove those you do not use and avoid loading heavy scripts on every page.
Use caching and a good host
A caching plugin and reliable hosting make a big difference on WordPress sites. If your server response is slow, no front-end fix will fully solve it.
Check the mobile layout
- Text readable without zooming
- Buttons large enough to tap with a thumb
- No content wider than the screen
- Forms that are short and use the right keyboard type
- Pop-ups that do not cover the main content
Fix layout shifts
Set width and height on images and reserve space for banners so content does not jump while the page loads.
Keep improving
Re-test after each change and keep a simple record of what you changed. Small improvements add up over time.
